Thanks Charlotte - I'm really torn with it as a concept! Partly I think there are more efficient ways of achieving the same aims - I wasn't thinking wasteful just in terms of paper, but also in terms of time and related cost in managing the proces...

sorry to be bah, humbug but what's the point? Is it that MP's are more likely to take messages written on paper more seriously? otherwise I don't get the advantages of doing this rather than presenting them electronically, isn't it just a bit wast...

lol I don't think many of us call them 'Shires' - local council here usually means Town, County Council would be the Shire bit ;-) Thanks for sharing Sherif, looks cool

Hi Mike, we've had this guy post a message on the CYP Now website. We don't currently have a dedicated resources section but my head of online content is looking at what we can do. Do you know of anything that already exists? Here's the discussion.

Many thanks,

ARGH! You’re linked to yomo training.
i attended NYA participation works conference in Sep and the BEST speaker by FAR was a young person presenting on yomo (apologies forgotten her name). Her presentation was the best in regards communicating clearly to the audience, content was relevant and informative - kick arse!

That would definitely be useful - I can see situations where groups might want to have discussions not viewable by the rest of the centre - the equivalent of a group confidentiality policy.

Thanks
Charlie

Hi Mike,

Thanx for shaving my yeti!!!! I've stopped using that site at the mo as we've found in work that .asp sites are becoming victims of malware attacks form some dodgy gambling site in Russia!!! Loving the blog tho....

Hi Alex - thanks for the comment. Interestingly no we don't have a good practice document - this is because of the way we've evolved - we originally had our own online network that we used to keep in touch with volunteers and to manage opportunities for courses etc. About a year ago we moved to google groups but didn't like it) and then to Facebook. We're only a very small organisation and only myself and the Directors & Lead Trainers have access to personal details etc. (all required to have Criminal Record Checks) but because in effect we've always operated online we've never had that moment of thinking we need to put a policy in place (+ of course we don't have the same issues as local authority groups).

It is something I'd be interested in developing though - not just from a safety aspect but also for good practice in making it effective - we have had issues in the past with previous staff perhaps wasting too much time or not being effective in online communications so it would be interesting to explore that. Facebook is actually probably safer than when we had our own network running of our server because Facebook is quite limiting in the data we can access about users anyway, so that would also be an interesting thing to explore in terms of data access and child protection etc.

It'll be a little while before I can give it proper thought but I'll stick it on my todo list - not least because it would be handy to be able to provide local authorities with a model they can use for some of the stuff we're trying to develop at the mo - I'm sure its the sort of thing Tim Davies would be interested in looking at too.

best wishes - mas

Hi Mike,
I've been reading loads on your blog as well as Tims over the last few days and have a question about your entry on Bored With Facebook! You mention you already have a Facebook group set up for YoMo. Do you have a good practice document for interactions with young people online? It's something the local authority I work for is struggling with!

Alex
ps. really enjoyed your blog!

Brief bio: tell us a few facts about you & your interest in digital aspects of work with young people
I'm interested in the use of the internet as a positive development tool to support young peoples development & community participation.

I develop training and resources for youth participation both in the UK and Ireland and have worked over in Donegal and a few other places in between there & Belfast! Previously I set up and ran YoMo Community Interest Company and before that I set up the National Young Movers programme supporting young people in areas of deprivation throughout the UK to organise community activities.

Currently I'm Chairperson of The YoMo Foundation, supporting children in Malawi to have the opportunity to attend secondary school.

How will Youth Work use the Web in 2009?

I've put up a slideshow of thoughts from different people about how Youth Work will use the web in 2009 - you can also listen to DK's (Mediasnackers) ideas in a youtube film too.

Please add your own thoughts or comments about the predictions

Digital Youth Work - Appreciating the Environment

I've stuck up my thoughts about how the framework for the first of the Digital Youth Work Courses could work. The first course has the theme of 'Appreciating the Environment'.

What we need now is ideas for the practical activities that make the connection between online resources and using technology to help yo… Continue

Why Bother?!

I've done a summary of the responses from the session that Jon Jolly and myself did - the summaries are just from the bits that people stuck onto my impromptu 'interactive bar chart sheet!' - but I've added some personal thoughts about the subsequent discussion over on my blog too

If you just want to get straight to the responses heres a copy of the summary....… Continue
