Brief bio: tell us a few facts about you & your interest in digital aspects of work with young people
I'm an independent researcher / consultation / participation practitioner who has found himself working a lot around young people and technology.

A typical working week (not that such things exist) might find me writing a guide on using social media tools for youth engagement, training youth workers in making the most of social networks, running an online course for activists in campaigning with internet video and researching something completely non-internet connected on youth policy or participation practice.

A typical week outside of work might find me spending a lot of time in the kitchen cooking, trying to get out for a good long walk somewhere, staring out of train windows at canals and, over the next couple of months, packing boxes for moving house from Leicester to Oxford.

Beyond Twitter: Young people and youth work in a digital age

We had a great day yesterday at Glyndwr University for the Beyond Twitter: Young people and youth work in a digital age conference.

A morning of ideas & input:
The morning of presentations started with an overview of the big picture of Digital Britain from Simon Stewart, who also previewed the new resource sharing site he has been developing,… Continue

Social Media Youth Work Policies

A theme that returned at the 'Youth Work in a Digital Age' conference today was the need for policies that support use of digital tools in youth work.

What is out there already? Do we need explicit digital youth work policies? Or are the key issues already covered by the national guidance for youth workers - such that we just need to interpret existing practice?

The policy tension
I'm often asked by youth workers about whether there is, or could be, a national policy on digital youth wo… Continue

Could you write on Youth Culture and Net Culture: Online Social Practices

I've just had an e-mail drop into my inbox with a call for proposals for chapters in an upcoming book on 'Youth Culture and Net Culture: Online Social Practices'.

The brief for the book suggests that chapters might cover issues including:

# Adults' reactions towards young people's Internet use
# Youth culture in a historic perspective
# What young people are doing online; description and problematisation
# Abusive practices; cyber bullying and online harassment
# Online sexual predators and th… Continue

Hi Tim,

I've been following your online updates and am really interested in the future of youth work online. I'm currently studying an MA in youth work at Brunel and intend to write my dissertation on the topic. Do you possibly have any tips on directions for reading? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Sarah

I am keen to enable online contacts to be recognised for their impact, and am exploring designing simple quizzes for young people to complete using the 'rate your youth worker' headline, but very much about recognising any difference we have made on line; once printed out, I would propose that they could form the evidence for our performance returns.

the questions would be framed on the ECM outcomes. I am keen to find out of any other youth workers have made headway in evidencing on line work.

Hi Tim
Yes, I am looking at how the use of Social Networking Sites influence the self-perception of young people and also the implications for leisure pursuits and academic attainment.
What are you going to do back in full-time education?

That's a great idea Tim,
I know it's eaisly done with the software i am using but to be honest a lot of people are signing up and don't know how to use the forums so i think i need to do a piece of work on showing them the ins & outs of how it works.

I have had a great response from people working on the ground all over the country but as i suspected the main Irish youth orgs are reluctant, there more interested in who the site is affialated to.

If you provide me with a logo i'll stick it up on my links page.

Great idea about going mobile.

If you had an rss feed for your forums 'd be interested in setting up a seperarte YOUTH WORK ONLINE forum?

Cheers

Hi Tim
Somehow I seem to have forgotten the email I used to setup my original account. Could you tell me what I used and I'll track back from there.
Thanks

Hi Tim

We are looking at the practical issues involved for a rural area like ours at the moment but are very interested in looking at social networking and online methods of participation. Some of the group have put forward a big bid to the lottery which includes setting up blogging....most of us are still really getting to grips with what opportunities are out there. I would be very interested to look at other areas and find out how they are doing it!

Hi Tim

I don't have any great examples to share at the moment, but I'm looking into it. That's partly why I joined this network - to see how other sectors are using social media and networks etc. Did you set up the Youth Work Online network? If so, it'd be great to chat offline / meet up to talk about your experience of doing that.

Quite a lot of women's organisations are using facebook (e.g. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2451312346 and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6812316699) and I also use Twitter (http://twitter.com/whywomen).

I'll keep an eye out for anything useful I can share with the network!

Hi Tim

Thanks!

Will discuss your work with the local youth council and see how we can share our experiences of developing the site together - I would like to get their views and tips as well.

Happy New Year!

Bye
Lynne
