My issues are more prosaic - getting the kit for young people in my centre to access the web in the first place....... Reflecting on the last few months work, I would also say that there are literacy barriers to overcome for a lot of young people,...

Hi Charlie, yes I worked at Stoops as well as other centres, street based provisions around Lancashire. I am not sure if I can place you but think you are the fellah who was mates with Neil from Lancaster. I seem to remember a strange night out at the "sugar shack" in Lancaster where things got really messy, are you that Charlie. I've been down in Cardiff for a number of years now and have for the most part stayed within youth work. Hope you are who I think you are, if not please remind me as I can't tell from the photo.

Cheers

Hi Charlie - one thing that might be of use is that with wordpress you can have the ability to password protect certain posts - so if you were wanting to have a blog that was part publicly accessible but also with some media content restricted to young people and relevant others you could set it up so that those posts are password protected.

The other option would be to set up a blog with sections viewable by members only by using plugins like this

Good luck setting up

Brief bio: tell us a few facts about you & your interest in digital aspects of work with young people
I work for Lancashire Young People's Service in Carnforth
I am the Team Leader of the Carnforth and Rural Team.

I started out doing a lot of peripatetic work for a sexual health project called 'Sharing the Challenge' that used Rap and 4-track recording as a medium.
This eventually lead to a project with the British Council and SACRO in Swaziland working with street children on HIV/AIDS awareness in 1996.

I also worked in Lancaster Farms YOI teaching music and health studies while doing freelance recording work with Action Factory in Blackburn. This lead to work in PRUs and 'EBD' schools such as the Amani Centre in Mosside.

Part-time work with the Carnforth and Rural team built up over the years until one thing lead to another and I applied for the Team Leader role.
Secondments have included managing the Ridge Centre for a year, and managing the Movin' Up project for a year.

We are just about to move into a new build - a Children's Centre which we are sharing with Early Years / Sure Start.

I plan to start a blog which will hopefully enable a dialogue about how the centre will be used. It can also be a safe space to post media that young people have produced. I would like it to be part of our consultation strategy with young people about what they want, part of engaging them in their centre and providing opportunities to celebrate their personal development.

Any tips on that gratefully received!

As a youth worker I particularly enjoy using music as a medium, and also have strong interests in masculinity/young men's work, personal safety/self-defence for young men.

For examples of my acoustic noodlings, my musical notebook, see my Odeowebsite, a kind of audio blog (above)
Other youth work interests include: how to make recorded outcomes more owned by young people.

Carnforth Hub - the new blog

I am in the process at the moment of researching blogs and how they can be used for the meaningful engagement of young people.
I have had the go ahead to create one by the organisation on the conditions that it is planned like any other project i.e. with a NAOMI, risk assessment, advice on security settings, and transparency.
Young people wont be able to publish or change the site with out going through me - its heavy moderation or nothing. Comments?

Also, an exit strategy will have to be developed and discussed with my line manager.

So when all that is thought through, then I will put the blog on-line, and I will be able to share the link. A link will also go on the our weblet and the main page at the Lancashire People's Service website.

This may sound cumbersome, but actually I think its a really supportive response that protects workers and young people, instead of just ignoring the opportunity.

Looking forward to getting feedback on it.
I have a few suggestions from young people in one of our groups as to names:

What ever you want it to be
Speak your mind
Say what you think

New Blog Banner

The Carnforth Hub Blog 'Whatever you want it to be' now has a banner designed by one of the young people.
Now we have moved a PC into the new centre from our drop-in room at the school, this work can be done more spontaneously.
Still no new kit though....

Also one of our groups has done some ground rules for use of this PC in open sessions e.g. give people some privacy when they are entering their passwords on SNSs etc

Work with Young Men / Young Men's Groups - where are we ?

I have just learned that I have been given district responsibility for work with young men in Lancaster and Morecambe.
As this has been an interest/specialism within youth work for a while, thats great.

I would be happy to network with any other youth workers who run young men's groups.

I would like to know how this work is perceived and progressing around the country, especially in the light of the re-organisation of many youth services. We are some way past the situation in the eighties and… Continue

Responses to the Carnforth Blog 'Whatever you want it to be'

There have been some encouraging responses from young people, other youth workers and teachers at the school. Its early days, but the feedback so far suggests that having this channel for young people to access the service is really worthwhile.
