Youth Work Online

Exploring youth engagement in a digital age

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a very good ( hopefully ) easy website builder which i could use with young people to create a website for the youth clubs i work in.

We find that a lot of our yp that attend youth club are using technology even at the club through their phones / pda's etc!!!!

Following discussions with them, they are in agreement that it would be a good idea to have a community portal which they can access and update. I have gone down the facebook road but my LA have put a big no no on that at the moment, any advice from anyone regarding this ???

Shame to have all these tools and not use them !!!

Thanks in advance!

Andy

Hey Andy

One route that can by really easy is to use Wordpress, the blogging platform, to create a website.

You can create static pages of content, and use the 'blog' feature to post news updates regularly - and you can use other free tools so that young people can get those news updates to e-mail / mobile phone etc.

The hosted Wordpress.com platform is free - and you can find a one page guide / introduction here.

What would others suggest?

Blogspot is very easy to use and you can easily update it quickly and post new stuff.

I use Blogspot to communicate with my leaders and facebook (plus a www.dbiz.org.uk">website we paid for) for young people.

Many thanks for the replies Tim and Gareth,

I was looking at www.moonfruit.com which seemed quite easy and when discussing the issue with the young people it was the one they seemed to like. Any feedback on this one?

I personally do like the wordpress idea as im a fan of the little add ons, especially regarding updates to emails / phones etc.. i just have difficulty with the child protection issues from those above taking a stern stance on such communication methods... whilst i understand its sooooooo ruddy frustrating!
