Youth Work Online

Exploring youth engagement in a digital age

Is anyone using them for Youth Work?

I've just been taking a look at Fan Pages again - and it looks to me like they offer a really good option for Youth Work settings - both for promoting youth and and for Participation

Young people becoming a fan doesn't reveal their personal info to a worker. They are easy to manage and flexible.

Hi Tim, hoping to use the new pages format to support wider participation in our new County Children and Young People's Forum. Will let you know how we get on. Now that they are much more integrated with the Facebook updates it should hopefully prompt 'fans' to visit them more often!

Here in the States I use FB all the time with and among my clients. In fact, I maintain a MySpace account and a FB account as part of my regular daily work. As a 59 year old adult, I don't like MySpace much at all, but I've noticed over the years that some teens will use MySpace and never touch FB, and vise-verse. I tell my clients that ten minutes after I retire someday that MySpace is gone!

I use FB almost as much as email to communicate with my clients... and find that it's crucial. FB is also gaining adult?parent members all the time too, which again, is helpful for me when I need to reach a parent. (I'm find that a lot of parents will check their FB accounts before they leave work, which is good if I'm trying to get a message out to a group of parents, etc.) I don't use many FB aps though, as I don't like the way they snag your profile info...not to mention the kazillion kids who use them and sent you lots of junk messages I don't need to deal with!

I agree. I've used both groups and fan pages and I think I prefer fan pages. Recently Facebook has let you name your fan page with a /fanpagename but only if you have 1000 'fans'.

Just an FYI

Absolutely - and they can take apps, so extensibility is as easy as adding an app. to your own page. There's a load of useful apps available - it's not all mafia wars...

Not a Facebook app, but a useful RSS gadget. Actually - a blinding RSS gadget.
